Document One - Klaxon - Technique Summer 2016 LP Sampler 2 [Technique Recordings]
After the heavyweight horns of Drumsound & Bassline Smith’s Rise of the Black Panther signalled the approach of Technique’s Summer 2016 album, the follow-up punch of the combination is here. You may well have already heard Friction drop this on his Radio 1 show but, for those that know, no endorsement’s necessary. The Document One name on this release will be all the seal of approval required.
On Klaxon, the Document One boys have taken the the summer sunlight and filtered it through the lens of the smoky, low-down-dirty jazzfunk style that’s made their reputation. The intro blends atmospheric and sultry as minor key sweeping chords support an almost euphoric vocal riff. From the word go, this is clearly twilight music, the intersection of light and dark which perfectly reflects the vibe of summertime raving.
Then, we’re treated to a drop that marks this tune out as quintessentially Document One. That entwining of live and synthetic bass, the casually powerful drum programming and the musicality that aims straight at the dancefloor all combine to make this another guaranteed rave weapon. Once again, these producers have managed to combine elements of jazz, funk and tech into something that is uniquely theirs.
So, two tracks in, and already it’s apparent that the Technique Summer 2016 album is set to be special. The strength in depth of the label’s roster means that every angle and interpretation of the summertime D&B experience can be represented. Feels like we’re in for a heatwave!
